Census of Manufacturing Industries is conducted under the Section 9 & 10 of General Statistics Act, 1975 and the Sections 5 & 6 of Industrial Statistics Act 1942 and covers the industries under the Section 2(j) or 5(i) of Factories Act 1934. It is conducted after every five years; the first CMI was conducted in 1954. It was a joint effort of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Directorate of Industries Punjab, Directorate of Labour Welfare and the Punjab Bureau of Statistics.

CMI provides basic statistics about large scale manufacturing sectors. The results of CMI are used for analyzing current economic/industrial developments, preparations of gross domestic products of the country, planning/policy making purposes and for rebasing of national accounts.
